As the American music festival scene heats up, this burgeoning offshoot of popular culture is increasingly reliant on diversified, electronic jam-oriented acts as a key component of the festival atmosphere. Georgia natives STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) are one of the most innovative and energetic live electronic jam acts on the festival scene today. Combining sounds ranging from electronic, dubbing, computer-generated, synthesized, and live instruments into one groove-oriented, shape-shifting, jazz-of-the-future fan-focused jam, STS9 has vitalized festival goers (often till the wee hours of the morning) at over 40 festivals (Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, to name a few) across the western United States, the Midwest, and even in Japan. STS9 music ranges from peacefully trance-like to complexly-textured, body-moving breakbeat to an irresistibly fun all-out funk jam.
As incredibly talented live performers, STS9 produce captivating tracks that can cause cerebral delirium that turns into an undeniable body-frolic. A significant portion of their live shows consists of improvisational material, where they emphasize variations of a melodic or rhythmic theme rather than grandiose instrumental solos in their jams. STS9 releases include: Interplanetary Escape Vehicle (1999), Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace (2000), Artifact (2005), and Artifact: Perspectives (2005), as well as many recordings of their jaw-dropping live performances.
Tickets for the July 10, 2008 late night STS9 “Second Set” at the Barrymore are only available with the purchase of a Combined ticket that includes the STS9 & Umphrey’s McGee Willow Island concert earlier that evening.
